Second keynote from Professor Dr. Rudi Studer

It was very interesting report from Professor Dr. Rudi Studer – the Immediate Past President of Semantic Web Science Association and Karlsruhe Institute of Technology & FZI Research Center for Information Technologies about The Semantic Web. It was presentation about enabling innovative approaches for handling information and services. The main idea of his report was creation of Semantic Web that would help to connect people and information faster and more precisely and that’s why would raise the creation of online knowledge at a new level. It was the very first time on APE 2009 when somebody emphasized the idea of Semantic Web creation.

Keynotes from Professor Georg Winckler

President of European University Association, Rector of University of Vienna; Professor Dr. Georg Winckler presented his report about Universities in the 21st Century. He told that originally universities were a community of teachers and students dedicated to learning. But now he tells that universities in the 21st Century should make junior researchers more independent and that he hopes on open science, on fast and open publication. He underlines that researches should give up their rights to research results to give students rights to get latest researchers and knowledge. Professor Dr. Georg Winckler thinks that it would be very useful for future innovations.

Words of greeting from Michael Mabe and Karl-Peter Winters

Fourth International Conference on Academic Publishing in Europe (APE 2009) which was taking place from 20 to 21 January in Berlin was opened by CEO of International Association of STM Publishers – Professor Michael Mabe. In his presentation Professor underlined that APE would examine influence of publishing through institutions not only like repositories and libraries but also with regard of usage statistics. Second word was from Dr. Karl-Peter Winters – Member of the Board of the German Association of Publishers and Booksellers. Dr. Winters thinks that one of the most important changes were: the Google book settlement, introduction of Amazon’s Kindle and the Libreka book finder.
